Killing the Black Body: A Reading Retreat

400+1’s reading retreats are experiences intentionally crafted with the idea that the examination of the Black experience and the naming of the phenomena that comprise it are prerequisites to the collective healing that serves as a crucial component of building Black capacity for mass movement.

About the event

Join 400+1 in Eclectic, AL for a thorough review of Killing the Black Body by Dorothy Roberts. We are excited to gather to stoke the flames of reproductive revolution by redirecting conversations around bodily autonomy to include Black women’s centuries long struggle to reclaim ownership of their reproductive organs from white slave owners whose legally supported exploitation of Black reproduction denied Black women their right to plan and protect their families. We hope that we can shift focus from the legality of reproductive equity to the morality of it, to our entitlement to it, and to the feasibility of it when undergirded by the power of people who reject the state as an authority on Black bodies or on Black lives.

400+1’s reading retreats are experiences intentionally crafted with the idea that the examination of the Black experience and the naming of the phenomena that comprise it are prerequisites to the collective healing that serves as a crucial component of building Black capacity for mass movement.

Each retreat is a five day reprieve for self care and study; an all expense paid vacation during which the only requirement is reading.
